After all, who wouldn’t want to feel a bit more present during the hustle and bustle of life? And while the idea of mindfulness is certainly compelling, the act of starting a mindfulness practice can be overwhelming. Read on for some tips on mindfulness for beginners.

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is all about being present in the moment, but it’s much more than just a casual meditation session. Mindfulness is an evidence-based practice proven to help ease stress and promote emotional regulation. At its core, mindfulness is the practice of acknowledging the things happening around you, the space you’re moving through, and the way you feel with minimal distraction. For example, someone practicing mindfulness might work to savor a cup of coffee in the morning instead of chugging the coffee while scrolling through their work emails. That person’s mindfulness practice might focus on enjoying the taste of the coffee, checking in with how their body feels, and generally working to be present in the moment without fretting about the past, the future, or the notifications on their phone.

The idea of starting a mindfulness practice can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are several easy ways to begin implementing mindfulness for beginners. The truth is that you can practice mindfulness at any moment – for example, during your commute or while you’re eating dinner. Here are a few ideas to help you ease into a mindfulness practice:

  • Set aside designated time to practice: You don’t need to join an expensive yoga studio or wear a special outfit to practice mindfulness. Start by setting aside five or 10 minutes a day to tap into how you’re feeling.
  • Get comfortable: Try starting your mindfulness practice in your favorite chair or just before lying down to sleep at night. You want to do your best to eliminate distractions, so make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothing and have silenced your phone for a few minutes.
  • Hold the judgment: When you’re new to mindfulness, it can be easy to get frustrated with yourself. After all, we’re programmed to respond immediately to our surroundings, answering text messages, completing work tasks, and letting the dog out as quickly as possible. Try not to judge yourself if you have a hard time remaining calm during your mindfulness practice. Your goal should be to live more fully in the present moment – not to establish some unrealistic sense of zen.
